Course Summary

This introduction to engineering, hardware and robotics is packed with hands-on activities to keep kids excited about learning! In a nutshell, join straws to create 3D shapes, structures like bridges and towers; learn the engineering concepts that make everyday mechanisms function; then power up your robots with the Quirkbot!First, join colourful reusable straws to learn about engineering and create basic 3D shapes, like a tetrahedron, cube, and more, using your creativity and resourcefulness to construct your own marvelous structures and mechanisms.

Then add in a Quirkbot into the mix – that’s a mini computer that’s small in size but HUGE in versatility! You’ll then apply your coding superpowers to program your robots using a block-based interface. And as you’ll see, the possibilities of what you can create are endless!

What You'll Learn

Learn through play using Strawbees – get hands on to learn about engineering concepts while having a blast! You’ll:

  • Practise building in 2D & 3D Shapes
  • Learn about structures & stability
  • Let loose with your imagination and creativity with free building

Incorporate tech into the mix with the Quirkbot – through tinkering you’ll discover the world of microcontrollers while also:

  • Understanding Inputs & Outputs
  • Deepening what you know of mechanical mechanisms
  • Controlling Servo Motors
  • Making your ideas come to life!

And of course, you’ll take away life skills that’ll serve you well on the adventure of life, including:

  • Creative confidence

What You'll Create

You’ll apply your knowledge of robotics, engineering and code to create your very own mechanism made of straws, and powered by the Quirkbot!

Introduction and ice-breakers, or a recap of the content covered on the previous day

Learn about new concepts in programming, explained by your instructor in engaging, interactive ways

Sandbox time! Students are put to the test to apply the concepts they’ve learned through fun challenges, like building their very own tech-powered creations. As part of this they go through the processes of planning, making, iteration, and sharing what they’ve made with their classmates and getting feedback from their instructors and peers.

To end off the lesson, students work on their individual projects that they’ll present to their parents, instructors will recap the day’s learning, or kids might take part in an interactive quiz to find out how much they’ve understood the day’s new learnings! Students are also encouraged to practice responsibility by packing up and cleaning up their work space.

“A machine is basically a bunch of moving parts put together. It’s about figuring out how each part works and then how to get them working all together. Your Strawbees structure is the same – you start with simple cubes and triangles, you put them all together to create a machine, and then you program the Quirkbot to get the parts to move. We want kids to be able to apply what they learnt in Scratch to something really fun that challenges their creativity and at the same time, has real-life applications. In this course, their creativity really is the limit.”
